Stricter Laws for Agricultural Land

The Bali Provincial government is set to introduce new regulations that control the use of agricultural land so that overdevelopment does not infringe on Bali’s ability to produce food.

Agricultural land has been dwindling in Bali with the advent of tourism related developments. The regulation is needed to maintain at least 81,900 hectares of agricultural land area if Bali wanted to be able to produce a surplus of rice. Bali Tourism Office records the number of hotels in Bali at this time has reached 2190, with 45,408 rooms. Conversely, Bali’s rice production has fallen from 878,000 tons to 846,000 tons. Along with the reduction in farmland, many farmers have found employment in the tourism sector with a recorded 673,928 farmers in 2010, and 643,029 in 2011.
