School educates youths on Balinese culture

Two executives of the influential Grand Council of Customary Villages (MUDP), the umbrella organization for 1,483 customary villages across the island, spoke passionately about the island’s social and cultural heritage before dozens of youths in Kedonganan, South Kuta.

The youths are the first class of the Sekolah Kahuripan, literally meaning the “school of life”, which is the council’s initiative to educate Balinese youths on various aspects of the island’s traditional institutions, traditional law and the religious and communal duties of a Balinese man. During that session, the fifth of the 12 sessions planned for the class, Sumarta spoke about the history of Desa Pekraman (customary village) and its relevance in contemporary Bali. Known as the island’s most powerful traditional institutions, customary villages have a long history as guardians of the island’s cultural diversity.
