Sanur threatened by declining water table

Excessive use of groundwater by companies around Sanur led to leaching of seawater into the groundwater up to 600 meters indoors, poisoning the gardens.

The authorities have warned that underground cavities created to draw water from the rock could cause the collapse of buildings. The high absorption of the water around Sanur for use in swimming pools and other facilities have created voids in the substrate region. The cavities are emptied of water, which could cause a collapse of buildings north of the beach. Action is needed to counter the problem, such as preparing materials for the water to enter the ground, through absorption wells, and that sort of thing. There are potentially similar problems for groundwater in other major tourist areas, including Kuta and Nusa Dua.
