Protest Against Bali Turtle Trade

Conservation group ProFauna staged a peaceful protest at Puputan Square in front of Government house to raise awareness about the illegal trade in turtles in Bali.

According to a survey conducted by ProFauna in January, there are still dozens of souvenirs made from hawksbill turtles. Bracelets, cigarette holders and large jewelry boxes are sold freely to the tourists. According to Law No. 5 of 1990 regarding Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems, perpetrators can be subject to five years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 100 million. All species of sea turtles in Indonesia have been protected by an Act of legislation, so we ask the parties concerned to stop this trade, which could also damage the image of Bali in the eyes of the world.
