Palm Oil Company Wins, Orangutans Lose

Environmentalists are up in arms over a court decision which has failed to stop a palm oil company destroying a protected habitat for orangutans in Sumatra.

The case began when Aceh’s governor issued a permit last August allowing palm oil company PT Kallista Alem to set up a new plantation in the protected carbon rich peat forest area of Tripa, south of the province’s capital. After months of detailed arguments from both sides, the court in Banda Aceh threw the case out on the grounds that the complainants from the Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi), should have first sought mediation.
