Over 1300 hectares of rice fields lost last year

Data from a recent study on the conversion of paddy fields in Bali has revealed that as much as 1341 ha is now being lost per year being converted for a different function. Of that number, 46.7 percent was recorded as being converted for residential use.

The transfer of land has been biggest on the wetlands around the city of Denpasar as well as other areas in Badung and Gianyar. Meanwhile in the light of Bali’s centuries-old rice paddy irrigation system (subak) being nominated for World Heritage status, the government are being forced to take action on legislation to help slow the land conversion and protect Balinese agriculture.
