No more sensual, clownish monster dolls

Denpasar cultural agency tried to put a leash on the local youths’ aesthetic creativity in designing their ogoh-ogoh, the giant papier-mâché dolls that would be paraded on the street procession on the eve of Nyepi.

The agency recently published a guideline stipulating that ogoh-ogoh must be in the forms of buta kala, traditional demonic ogres and creatures in the Balinese Hinduism mythology. It reminded the youths that ogoh-ogoh is supposed to be the visual representation of these demonic beings and that the Ngerupuk street procession is specifically aimed at warding off those beings.
