Lackluster market hampers organic farming

Bali administration’s program to transform the island’s agriculture into a fully organic enterprise faces a serious obstacle as farmers are reluctant to abandon chemical fertilizers due to the belief that organically grown vegetables have inferior properties and lack demand.

Farmer still relies on chemical fertilizers and pesticides to grow crops, even though he is aware of the health risks of using such chemicals. If the farmer grow plants organically, they grow slower and don’t look good, they are afraid the crops wouldn’t attract buyers. Bali administrations plans to build a market for organic farm products this year in Canggu and to not provide a subsidy for chemical fertilizers for farmers. The Rp 4 billion (US$44 million) budget would be allocated for organic fertilizers.
