La Nina is Dead

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has announced that the weather phenomenon known as La Nina, which has brought rains and irregular weather to Indonesia, has ended.

They report that key atmospheric and ocean indicators have returned to more neutral measurements and that those conditions were likely to persist until June. The event had peaked in January of this year according to a statement released by the bureau. The La Nina oscillation of ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions brought heavy rains and cloudy weather to much of Northern Australia and Indonesia, with 2011 being the second wettest year on record globally. The weather phenomenon happens every three to five years and is characterized by cooling surface water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
