Fungus threatens Bali cacao production

A dangerous fungal disease has attacked cacao plantations in Jembrana, the largest producer of cacao in Bali, threatening the island’s cacao-production levels.

They found a fungus species Onchobasidium theobromae, which causes a disease called vascular streak dieback (VSD). The fungus attacked the stems of cocoa plants and got into the xylem, the wooden tissue, causing the plants to turn yellow and die. Bad weather could trigger the spread of the fungal disease, causing the crops to rot. According to data from the plantation agency, Bali produces around 7,000 tons of cacao every year, with a price of Rp 23,000 per kilogram. Bad weather could decrease production levels up to 20 percent.
