Balinese people observe "Nyepi" in silence

The streets were deserted in Bali for 24 hours, from Friday to Saturday morning, most of the 3.9 million inhabitants of the island observed the public holiday of the Lunar New Year in silence.

There were 44,000 police and security guards traditional (Pecalang) deployed to ensure that no residents or visitors venture outside their homes or hotels during Nyepi. That day, the Balinese Hindus perform Catur Brata Penyepian (four abstentions) including Amati Geni (refraining from putting the fire or turn on the light), Amati Karya (refraining from working), Amati Lelungan (refrain from traveling outside the home), and Amati Lelanguan (not to take any form of entertainment). To observe the Hindu practice of the day, residents of other religions have had to follow strict religious demands and traditional staying home and turning off all lights. Radio stations as well as the local national, the national television and cable networks were not allowed to transmit in Bali on Friday.
