‘The gods will be angry’ Temple thefts in Bali

A recent spate of temple thefts across Bali points to a breakdown of society and an infiltration of the Island of the Gods by imperialism.

Religious effigies (pratima) are being stolen from temples across the province to be sold off to collectors. The thieves inevitably depend on inside information, as the location of pratima in temples is secret and sacred. In the recent past, Balinese were deeply afraid of the power of pratima and the gods that dwell within these sacred vehicles. However, with the advent of tourism and an ever-growing hunger for easy dollars, this fear has been quashed by greed.
